Site Description
Originally the city terminus of the Dublin & Kingstown Railway, opened in 1834, Pearse station is now a through station on the DART. The original station was built by William Dargan. Approaching the station from the north, a visually appealing station frontage is presented, the station having been painted in 1997. It could be said that this is the first time that the station here was worthy of comment, as by all accounts, the stations that have been here over the years were either mean little edifices, as was put by one individual "sufficiently characteristic of a public building without any attempt at embellishment", or not exactly worthy of attention. Pearse station has been rebuilt on a number of occasions since its opening with the ticket office moving between street level and platform level over the years. There are only two platforms remaining in use. There were previously two additional terminal platforms on the Up side and one on the Down side - all of which have been filled in. The former were a later addition to the station - work started in 1878 as part of rebuilding of the station and was finished in 1884. Immediately prior to this rebuilding, the station was raised from its original lower level to facilitate an eventual extension to Amiens Street. There is an interesting water tower at the Rosslare end of this, located above a private Irish Rail access road. The station buildings proper are on the Down side. The re-roofing of the train shed in recent years has led to the upper stories of this being brought into view. There is lift and escalator access to platform 2 and ramp access to platform 1. There is also a subway between the platforms. A second access to the station was added from Pearse Street in 2013.Photographs
